Buy a plane ticket instead

Buy a plane ticket instead

Have you ever noticed  how happy we feel when we buy a plane ticket? It’s always a new thrill. No matter how long the trip will last and how far you’ll go. In general, human beings do love to travel.

I was talking to a client of mine this week and she was telling me about her depression medication and how much she has invested in these treatments and how bad she felt.  It was the exact same day I had bought a ticket to a new journey and it just came out naturally: “Why don’t you try buying a plane ticket instead?”. For a minute I was afraid she would get upset with my suggestion, but she started laughing. I was so serious about it, though. She promised to think about ways of introducing the “online meeting” culture to her team so she can travel more and feel better.

Think about things you are investing your money in. Things that you are buying to make you feel better, prettier or more confident. Maybe it’s not depression medication, but a brand new car, or a brand new dress or even a bottle of some expensive whiskey? Where could you fly instead? Just open your google maps on your computer and think of a place  you would like to visit. Check skyscanner.com  or nomad list.com for tickets and go!

If you already have your online business or work for a remote company, that allows you to work from wherever you want, experiencing different parts of the world, you’re probably, like me, getting addicted to that “thrill” of buying a ticket to a new adventure. After a few months in one place I start craving for a new ticket 🙂

Hopefully, I think we will all have this freedom in the near future with the digital revolution we are going through. The leaders of bigger corporations are slowly waking up to how much more productive their teams can be when feeling free.  Fortunately, the growth of location independent culture is here to stay.

How could you slowly start to negotiate some remote tasks with your boss or partner every once in a while to increase your traveling days? As Tim Ferris points out in his book “The four hour work week”, maybe you could start by calling in sick every once in a while, and saying you will work from home? Then, make sure you produce 2 or 3 times more that day so you can show how efficient you can be from outside the office.

Let me know how it felt and how many times you thought about your “medication” while you were traveling? 🙂

So many times I saw myself buying a new ticket flight instead of buy new clothes or something material, but at the time I was not happy with my career and lifestyle, and then I decided burn out the bridges, quit my job and travel for some months. Now, I know exactly what I want and realized that life is too short to see it passing through a small window in the office. Thank you for this post!
